As I have shifted careers, I joined a company with a growth mindset as one of its core values. This company is different from other places I have worked in that the core values are fundamental and mean something. They are practices that the organization hires and fires employees over. The core values are more than a sign in the lobby of the building. They are tangible and fundamental values that you are measured up against daily.
“All change doesn’t create improvment, but all improvement requires change.”
In this new culture, I have reflected on my mindset. I have always had a growth mindset and am committed to growing and learning. I am constantly reading or listening to podcasts to learn. Learning is embraced in my current job, and the organization presents me with many opportunities to learn and grow professionally and personally. This is a good thing! This is also incredibly different than my previous experiences.
My zest for learning and trying new things was only sometimes appreciated in previous roles. There were instances of coworkers attacking me or new initiatives I was leading. There was an apprehensive distrust of anything new, often due to the perception that we were chasing some new shiny thing. This was incredibly frustrating and left me exhausted in many cases.
As I have found an organization that embraces growth and is constantly looking to do things better, I have been inspired. I am eager to learn and grow. I am committed to being the best version of myself, personally and professionally. Why is this so much different?
I have realized that a growth mindset is a blessing when surrounded by people with similar goals. A growth mindset is a curse when surrounded by people with different views or goals. It is easier to gain acceptance from a large group of people if the people in the organization share a similar mindset. If the organization does not reciprocate a culture of growth, it results in friction and a lack of productivity.
It is essential to find an organization that reflects your own goals around growth. If you are a person that craves growth and development, if you are currently in an organization that does not share that belief, you will end up frustrated and disengaged from your work. If you find an organization that aligns with your mindset, you will feel invigorated and enthusiastic about your work.
Find yourself an organization that will support your mindset. Your life will become exponentially better personally and professionally.
